The raw materials for ink production are pigments, binders, solvents and additives such as hydrocarbon resins or other resin derivatives. There are two classes of resins which are used in inks production: synthetic and natural.
Synthetic resins are based on polymerized petroleum feed stock and are known as hydrocarbon resins. The chemical and physical properties of synthetic resins are closely related to their chemical structure and composition.
Natural resins are gum rosins or their derivatives.
There are several functions in ink formulationsin which resin could be used, but the base function is to bind the ink together into a film and bind it to the surface. The main applications where resins or they derivatives are used are Offset and Public gravure inks.
